At welcome to another episode of beyond ato two, your hosttailor Stodolf. Today we have two boys Latin alums. First off we have Logan, was Nalsku blclass of two thousand and sixteen logans O redshird Junor at theUniversity of Maryland, and he plays attack for the Crosse team there. We also have Mark Lopez, bl class oftwo thousand and seventeen. He is currently a juior at ontokn universityand plays Outfield for the baseball team there as well. Welcome you guys, thanks for Aving US thank you havingistol yeah mark. Did I get the outfield part right? You did. I actuallyswitched up a little bit. I played it IU fieled, my freshmaneer, then I movedback to the Infield my sophomore year and a had to had to look up the roster. Iremembere that you mentioned. You played some Infield to so had to lookit up and do a little research before before he got on on the on the episodetoday, but welcome. Thank you guys for taking some time to talk with us, and you know we ere really interested aboutsome things that that have been going on throughout this coronavirus pandemic. But for we start getting into that, can you tell us a little bit aboutyourselves and where you're from how old you are, how long you went to bland and also what are you guys studying in school and Logan? If you want to go,first, go ahead, yeah, so I'm from Sykesville Marylandso little town in o Caro County. I decided to go to boys Latin indeighth grade so so I went there for five years. Nd No was the best decision.I made my life. You know the commute was kind of hardlike being forty five, fifty minutes away, but you know that didn't takeaway from like all the great relationships and like all the memoriesthat I made there so, like you said, like I go to theUniversity of Maryland, I started off at sircuse. You know wanted to be close at Ta home, so Itranferred to Maryland, where I had the opportunity to play the cross, and youknow it's just been a dream. Come true cooand. What are you studying there, starting American studies o with like a Mindor in calm? So that's great, that's Great Markk, howabout yourself sure I'm from Baltimore actually right in the Hamdon area. Icame to boys Latin in seventh grade and my experience be a little differentjust because I knew about boys Latin but wasn't necessarily planning ongoing there until I was introduced to some people that had connections- and I was thinking about going that for highschool Aftin, this connection, but it was kind of funny story. I ended upcoming here in seventh grade and I actually got in and kind of the processwas kind of sped up and I found out. I was going to boys Latin three daysbefore the seventh rade school year started. So I didn't know any teachersI didn't know any students and kind of coming in there with know being alittle nervous. It was one of the easiest tranditions of all time, evengoing from public school to private school, with all the teachers and kidseve everybody so accepting on me and made the like, I made the transition alot easier, it's great and and what are you studying now in school to I'mstudying economics and minoring in business? I've been like sad, a junior, it'sgreat and what what has before the show or before the episodestarted, we kind of talked a little bit about school and Hel. That's going with withvirtual learning and all and how's that...

...going for you, both yeah for Sureh. I can start hey got no,it's been. It's been kind of Offto, a rough start wash like you know this, like zoom stuff, like kind of trying to figureit out like how it works like youknow how to get your participation points and stuff like you know, knowingwhat you got to submit like what what papers you got to do like whatassignments you got to do like it kind of got off to a rough star, butyou know like, as we kind of settle in here for likethe third fourth week, like it's kind of like getting easier and you kind ofgetting into a flow of thing. So how about you mark yeah? A lot of theteachers actually have been really cool with everything and, like I say before,we're universal past faul now, but a lot of my final exams actually havegotten canceled and e teachers have like send emails. Just saying orexpressing that. Obviously learning and like a full graph of material is themost important in what they like want us to gain out of that. So we have alot of problem sets, but for the most part, they're counting on us to kind ofbuy into the whole experience and really get on the lectures participate, show your face, like kind of just same thing, where Lhat, the let the flow ofthe conversation go and just try to learn and Exceid. The grades aren't asimportant now, just because, like said, we're completely pass bailt but samethings, stay engaged an and try to learn, and everyone, or especially allteachers, Av really kind of bought into that concept, and it's kind of gonepretty well so far. Sure sure, that's great, and I know that a lot of peopleare puting a lot of hard work and just trying to remain positive and state thecourse in the virtual learning world as it can,it can be difficult to stare at a screen for for multiple hours up theday. Exactly so so e' START W th with mark here to a little bit. What haveyou been doing other than school? What what would haveyou een doing with your with your time during quarantine? So isay I'm a littlelucky I', live right off campus with four other baseball guys and three ofthem decided to stay in Baltimore and stay quarantied here, just because it'sa little safer, even though hasn't been great recently but once from New Yorkand one is from Miami, so they decide to stake. Or so at least we have fourguys kind of quarantine together and Ik said. Staying safe is the mostimportant thing, but we're still kind of motivating each other. Do some kindof backyard workout going for a couple runs that we really haven't been able to do,and we try to stay like a little bit playing baseball and Funny Arte toachestamous a few days ago and said that kind of the facilities are starting toth studies aren't open, but he, when I last to come and kind of used, Habadding cage and that's something that we can do now, which is samethinganything to get us out of the house and kind of outside. What we want yeah.Have you guys do a team workout on zoom or it's just kind of been go on yourown and Tusyas to theate decisions and keeping your body in tiptop shape andall yeah? Our strangth coach actually gave us a small workout program that wecan kind of follow as much as we can, but it's Tauh, because we have somesome weights here and at we don't have obviously a benchpressor kind of a squat rack. So it's a lot of bodyweight stuff and a lot ofconditioning that we really don't get to do a whole lot in season. So itstuff thots kind of same thing like building AP Muscle, building up somestreigth that way Ke. So we can kind of start now in thespring continued in the summer really get into it in the fall and then kindof come next spring. We should be kind of as big and strong as as ever before, yeah right and then log are you in Sykesvill, duris quarantine or did W at? Did youend up staying in College Park? No Yeah? I came home, I'm in Sike, so right nowwith my mom dad and brother and how hous that been for you guys. You know it's been fun, you know it's been a real treat. WE WE G T had thefortune of. We got a little poppy. We got an English bulldog and she's Ben inlike trying to take care of her and...

...stuff like wile, like you know, trying to stay inshape and stuff trying to do like our strengh, our strength, packet and stuff. An our strength coach gave us. You know, like like mark said, like the genericworkouts and stuff of, like you know, y. u, like you'R, jumping jacks like yourcouch dips, like whatever it is like you know getting outside like it's definitely been. It's definitelybeen fun to watch on social media. All the different creative ways that peopleare using yeah got ta get great like Yeout. Everyone has those racks andstuff that mark was talking about. So I mean you got to get creative. Somehowyou got T, I love tow. You Sa Cough Tips, you know it's using like yourliving room, couch you're. Just sweating watching like TV and yourfamilies in the like the dining room at the same time, yeah it's Greaty and it's definitely a perfect time to be a POPP, especially since, sinceallall animals ar domesticated animals are now getting like a hundred percent attention now, yeah now, absolutely youknow she's really bing on attention like when you leave her. She needs toknow like what's going on like she goes in the other room files. You see whatyou're doing. Let's so you know it's better since, like we ha bolldog beforeand passed away, like inn another one, you know it's been a real blessing andI'm sure it's nice to get some home cooked meals. Every day nowtil yeah absolottely, my moms Adduala phenomenal job with that gotta give them a big shout out on theepisode. Luty can't wait for the Takos an nigh to so yep exactly so so you know going back to when Yo w the governor's hogans finally madethe decision to shut down non essential businesses and all aswell as you know, the NCAA making the decision to cancel your guys sees wellWeryour, immediate thoughts when you heard that your season was canceled for us, it was a little weird justbecause we knew everything that was going on, but our season was canceledactually during our spring breakshrip. So we flew to Florida on Wednesdayevening or a Wednesday evening played a game on Thursday and found out rightafter our game that obviously were forced to fly back Friday morning andthat our season is suspended in definitely but more than likelycancelled. So it was kind of IFS kind of going to Florida in the first place. But it was weird that we went there and played one game and we're on twoflights and matter of forty eight hours kind of finding out our seasons. CANPyeah, I was going to say, did did you have games there or w more of like Likspring raining, or was it just that one game and youguys were it was it was a good time for some team bonding to kind of like thebl Al drips yeah for Stur Yeah? No, but it's of course, Ha team bondingexperience. But that's like one of the the bigger part of our schedules. Weplay eleven games in ten days, so it's pretty much all baseball. We all shot a team, emto team motel andhave a couple team dinners. But it's pretty much. Everybody gets a lot ofplaying tome down. There see what everybody has we get like ten gamesbefore the Florida trip. So that's like a a big part of our season and kind ofgoing into it. We lost our first two games of the year, we're obviously veryconfident in in our team, and we won nine out oftents. We were going in there hot we're, really excited for the rest of the year, and then it was kind of even though everyone had an idea of the coronavirusand kind of getting worse, its still kind of hit real hard. When it's like.Oh all of a sudden, you think you're playing the next day. Nine am and thenthe seasons canceled yeah yeah it was it was it was. You know that thatabruptness of your the canceflation think definitely made it worse oneverybody. So how about? How about you...

...to again yeah I mean we were just kindin disbelief. You know we were getting ready to play our rematch againsVirginia and we we figured out like thatThursday and, like we kind of went out, we did like Inter squabs grammage, likeyou know, like really intense, like everyone was kind of like switchingpositions and stuff like it was kind of cool, because we kind of knew it wasover, but w we kind of had like a false sense of hope, like maybe we were goingto play Virginia because you know we really want to play Virginia because welike what happened last year. You know especially being like a thirdlike, maybe like a halfway through the season, like you know, we're about toget into like the thick of things like traveling to Carolin, going to pennstate. You know, then we got Michigan and stuff like not being able to like. You know, playthose games like why you come to Marlan like n. You know it just kind of suckedand, like you got to like kind of feel bad for the seniors who, like don't getanother shot to you, know, put on the uniform yeah. It sounds like betweenyou and mark. You guys were both your teams were coming in really hotand were really looking to to to head deep into the pelfs in the NCAA SOMONE. That'sgot to sting like even more more so than anything else. You know for sure, and then what were kind of like youknow. I know you guys have alluded to it. A lot from the last question. But what werethose feelings and reactions of the team as a whole? Like did you guys, like derk coaches and a bringin, the entire team, and at the end of once, the decision was made to kind ofhave like a like an end of the season meeting, or did you guys send off yourseniors in a special way? You know we kind of got together afterlike Oure in Te Squad. Scrimmage and, like you know, coach Toeman was likeyou know like we don't really know like I'll. Let you know if I hear anythingbut like that, you know this could be it like th. That's why like cherishevery moment like you know, you cherish the Times you get with your broherothers on the field and y right. It was kit you kind of like just laid it downthe line like look. This could be the last time you pritice together, whichit was and like we didn't take it for granted. Like youknow, we kind of we kind of mourn in the locker room together as a team and, like you know it sucks, but the sun's coming off the next day and like youjust you got to move on Yeah Yeah, that's a great outlook. What about youmark yeah, like that we were in Florida, so enour coach. Well, he got the emailfrom arthletic director saying we had a come home and then obviously moreinformation about her seas being suspended, but he got that email duringthe game and of course he checked right afterwards and let us know the news, but it was a little weird, were just coming off a win and he's like. I guys, like Gotto, tell you something real, quick and again we had an idea of likewhat could be coming, but it was still a shocker right then, and then he justkind of of kept saying and keep us umdated. He doesn't know hopefullycourse hope for the best, but same kind of the truth, kind of hit it where it'slike. I really don't know this could be it and then we flew a lot of guys hopkins flew a lot of the team back otheir home. So a lot of guys didn't even come back to Baltimore. So, eventhough it tollutd down with with thirty five guys, we only came back with, likemaybe twelve, so that was a little a little weird too yeah, that's veryweird and and it thinks that you guys couldn't kindof finish it out together and Logan you've, you kind of alluded to italluded to it little bit about you know this. The Suncomes up the next day, but now that we've been in quarantine for almost a month or so what what have youguys been able to reflect on? You know and look at Thackco oneverything you know what have you guys? What's your outlook so far I mean yeah.I just kind of you know just been summarizing like you know how things golike you know, kind of taking a step...

...back. Looking at like the fall in thespring. Like you know, how can I be a better version of myself like whetherit's you know like studying harder like finding those extra hours of study likecoming home from practtice, like you know, like you're, tired, like youdon't want to study like you know, find in those extra hours like getting yourassignments done and stuff like looking at Lacrosse like? Where can I getbetter here, like cant like become a better dodger like work? On my olf hand, like you know, that's all stuff, you coal be doing right now, like even like you know, like I started likereading a book I started. Reading, like David Goginsand stuff, like calld, can't hurt me, like you know, it's a really good book, like you know, working on like y the mental side of things like trying to get that mentaledge show like come fall and spring next year, like I'm ready to go likewhen I'm back on campus yeah, it's funny because it's almost like there'sreally no excuse for you to not be doing anything. Absolutelyeverybody's got a little bit more time than it had in the past. So yeah wejust had a TUCKSCON meeting and he was like there's no reason why each andevery one of you shouldn't have two hands: COMEA yeah yeah, absolutely, and it's almostlike now more than ever, you you want to be doing this stuff, because there'sreally nothing else. T do ment way so you're just trying to find ways to pasttime. Yeah! Absolutely you know this is this is where you get better as aplayer and as as a person so yeah absolutely, and how about you mark yeah.I've been doing a lot of thinking and not just about like I said this pastyear, but more about next year, and I've been kind of staying in contactwith all the seniors and, as you guys know, like nt double a grantedeverybody next year, alligability so especially for Theufeel feel for Thamin the most but kind of trying to figure out if they're, coming back whattheir plans are. I know a lot of other schools extended their deadlines, ourcoaches Ane, keeping us up to dat to with like Grad students that maybecoming to hopkins so like trying to wrap your head around like what nextyear may look like an especially because I really don't know how thissummer and fall is going to play out too. So we usually have like a minifalse season where we kind of Innersquad and now that's a little bitin jeopardy. As I know, a couple F schools, one of my grooist littlebrother Gomes to Washington and League, and they just got an email saying andprepare yourself from maybe even another online semester in the fall sokind of thinking about that, and then also thinking about like trying to geta couple seniors to come back depending on their job situations and internshipinternship situations and also trying to think maybe what other guys arecoming in whath, that's going to do to roster sizes yeah. It's like four fiveyears yeah, and it's interesting that you said that you say that, because youknow you could look into it and, like you said at the beginning of thisepisode that you know you were playing a little bit of Inin field and now thatyour outfield. So you know you're kind of looking at the depth chart of nextyear, where you might say like. Oh that senior's not coming back, they mightneed to use me at a different spot. Where to where you know, I might needto start practicing that position again kind of thing yeah. Exactly becausethat's how kind of my at least my three years have been so far when I got there,a couple outfhiers got hurt and I moved to the oftfield played my freshman yearthere and then last year we didn't have as much INP des so Icame back and ended up Sto tarting an second base. So then this teer wasfunny. We had a little more infield and we lost our two or three starting outfitter. So I ment back to the outfold this year. So its kind of something and,of course, whatever helps the team out the most and ofcourse I just want to be in the line up, I don't care where I really playin thefiel I'll I'll work hard and get better at that. Like said no matter where that is, butnow kind of looking a next year, you really don't don't know what you'regetting, because you really might not see the freshman in the hall and youmight not see the Grad students really at all. Until maybe like said in lateJanuary, if something can worse, cay scenario, just kind of does continue into thefall, yeah and and just tha kind of rap bap it up. As we start to end here, youknow: Do you guys have any advice for...

...the BL senior class of two thousand andtwenty, along with other bl lums, who were seniors this year in college? As for the the Bl high scores, that'dsay, you know just like just work hard like just just know the time's comingwhere you when you'll be on campus. Like you know, college is a lotdifferent from high school, like it's reallly, demanding like classroom wise, like going to class, like you know, being accountable like getting up atthe CR, your aams and stuff, like you, know, getthing your work done like nothaving like your mom and dad over your shoulder, making sure your you know, you're doing your assignments and stuff, so I'd say Yo, just like mentally, likebe prepared like be ready like when the time comes, it's going to come and thetrains gin be rolling. Yep very well said very well said, and then yeah for me something thiskind of been keeping me kind of getting through all this is everyone is goingthrough the same thing and and that like well in general, and then youthink kind of seniors perspectives where they're kind of missing out ongraduation they're missing out on ton of their last season, especially if youplay a spring sport. A kind of cuer AD upstate motivated, keep working hard and boys. Latin, of course, is the best school out thereand prepares you so well for college and esaid. As long as you staymotivated, keep doing your work and coming in with just a good attitude andopen mindset. Of course you need to be ready to towork your butt off, whether that be kind of in sports academically and itsgoing to be cunging at times kind of living on your own. But if I can emphasize anything, it wouldbe that boys Latin has prepared me as best as they possibly could kindof cort for the college life and to liveon my own and kind of just growing into the PERSONI. An today yeah, I a I meanboth of you guys that it's you guys have have said it so well right there and to kind of snow snowball. On top ofthat, you know how did Bel Inpact, who you want now, and you know you guysboth have very similar mindsets in the in the sense of that you know just working hard, stayn and positive, butalso being prepared, and how did theyall really impact. You know thepets that you guys are taking, and you know how the the metal fortitude that you guyshave yeah. Absolutely. I definitely say youknow focusing on like the relationships like you know, from the top down, likeyou know, thecross wises, it starts with a coach. Michael Thomas, like youknow, he's an awesome guy like great relationship with him. Then it goes. You know o coach Ferel, you know, like you got coach Sharf like coach, Nay,you got had coach Ubiaco, like you know, like those guys like there's a guyslike you can always fall back on. Like all thayse guys, you got conversations. You know whether you're high, whether you're low, like whatever it is so like really having thoserelationships and like really building off of those relationships and stuff,is like something I really took from from boys Latin and went on to likecollege with Marylan. You know like coach Tollman, he's awesome like coach, rapper, coach jazz, like coach Ti, like everything like Su, you know havingthose relationships with the coaches is huge and yeah teachers as well. Youknow, like Mr Metchell, like absolutely love, Mr Mitchell, like Senor Clarklike she was awesome. She was another good one that I liked so just havingthose relationships and just really nurturing those relationships. I'd say:Yeah, absolutely yeah. I couldn't couldn't say it anybetter. I was gon say the same thing for me. I just actually right before. Obviously, all of this happened last fall. I went Alit my roommate grab a bite toeat and saw coach Crean well out, and he called me over gave m a big hug andtalk to him for ten minutes kind of just catching up and of course he staysup to date with me kind of Aske me how my seasons going. What I'm up to and hesame thing updates me about boys, Latin...

...wewhat. They have coming in what theythink's kind of kind of going to go one for the season and that's somethinghe's somebody that kind of I've always or helped me againlike grow to into the baseball player. I am and kind of into the person. I amA. I said, love him more than anything and somebody that I know I'll keep intouch with for a long time and then same with the kids. The teachers andkind of the administration same like Logan, said Mr Mitchell love MrMitchell and my kind of go to teacher a boys that was always miscase and I knowshe just moved, unfortunately, and had tohad to leave boys Latin but she's. Some someone I also stay in touch with andwas a great mentor. My advisor my teacher at boys, Latin and it's just different.I feel that boys Latin, just because not saying it's not going to happen inother schools, but the connection with Missgayson and kind of keeping keepingthat connection over a couple years isn't something I feel like you wouldreally get at another school yeah agree agreed and it truly is special. You can build telationships withteachers, you know staff and coaches and you can leave for you know five tenfifteen years, but once you come back or you just run into them aroundsomewhere, they know something about you, that's not delrelated. You know, Oh, you know your Junor at Hopkins. Now I heard you'replaying very well or you Git, a home, Rin o youknow or or they they go to stat. You know you at University of Maryland, andyou know you got like academic all American. I think that's that's prettyspecial that they're able to know that without having to have any contact withyou between those those kind of those thoseyears that you're not around campus anymore for sure and Wat. I see a couple peoplekind of just around town and MR G, I know lives close to kind of the Howkins area and same thing, just kind of catching out with him just seeing him kind of driving by and theneven disgaging and anybody else, with Hopkins being so close in Maryland alittle bit further from Baslatin. But I had a couple F. teachers and Col peoplecome down and even watch a game which is, which is a little crazy to thinkabout that they would kind of be that invested or any teacher would be thatinvested or have that kind of connection with one of their studentswhere they would kind of keep up and even even come to a sporting event. YeH, yeah absolutely well, that's all the time that we have but like to thinkboth of you guys, Logan and mark for for coming on taking some of the timeout of your Doday Itto, to chat with us and share your experiences. That'sgoing on right now, allright thanks tor there you beyon t two podcast featuresthe many incredible n Te, not in the boys Latin school Ar Alemni going to dosome extraordinary things in this wor in this podcast highlights theiraccomplishments.
